Good afternoon, ICers!

Last Sunday’s Run
How many of you made it out? A LOT for a not-so-warm morning. I wish I were one of them, as the running is always great, and it sounds like the post-race treats were not-to-be-missed:.

Matt posted: 12/3/06 Sun: How cold was it today? Not cold enough to keep 81 ICers from heading off to slay Longs Ranch Road! The snow was deep and the thermometer was stuck at 4 (four) degrees with reports of -4 from Barr camp. That being said, it was an awesome run! In the something new department, this season we are having “mini feed-bags” on the first Sunday of each month. Today those whose first name start with an A-E brought the food. Elaine Chavanon brought a tone of pastries from her restaurant, Marigold’s. It was a feast for sure:-)

Overheard On a Run
Eric Peterson writes: Funny thing heard on the run... “This isn’t the Santa Fe Trail.” The guy in front of me said this on the last uphill part before the J-Pipe shortcut. He was running a marathon next week and was looking for the short cut. Heard that and started laughing.

Thank You to the IC Moving Crew!
Carol Korth (Office Manager for TCR/PPM) writes: A huge Thank You to all who showed up in the snow, on a Saturday morning, to help with the move to the TCR/PPM’s new location in Manitou!! The oldoffice & storage area were emptied in about 35 minutes! Many hands do accomplish much in little time. Thank you!!

Christmas Party at Colorado Running Company — Tomorrow Night!
John O’Neill writes: Incline Club Members are invited to the CRC Party on Thursday December 7 from 6pm-9pm. Join us for a run or walk, food, drink and music.

Oops on an “R” Report:
Angela Cassidy writes (in reference to her PPM race report in last week’s newsletter): Apparently I blew it on my Race Report and put in my things done wrong under things done right. Here is the corrected “Things done right” for my PPM report:
*For downhill, I wore rollerblade wristguards. They saved me on several flying leaps.
*Didn’t do the Double.
*Had a confidence building training day up/down Mt. Whitney as my last long outing prior to taper.

Pueblo Rock Canyon Half Marathon — Pueblo, CO — 2-DEC-2006

Trish McCormick reports:
Distance: 13.1 miles
Goal: 2:24
Results: 2:32
Website: http://www.socorunners.org/results/RockCanyon2006.htm

General Summary:
The ride down was treacherous, slick, slick, slick, had no idea this could be any sort of omen. Pueblo was cold and it was still snowing. The trail was primarily flat, but slick with loose rocks(also covered with a thin layer of ice) scattered here and there.

Things Done Right:
I think running in the fall series was helpful. In the fall series, the third run — the trail was challenging and the last run included some bad weather.

Things Done Wrong:
Not enough “bad” weather and balance training — had such a hard time with slipping and remaining vertical. No yaktrax-- but I think that might have been dishonorable.

Any Other Stuff:
Beautiful scenery, too bad I had to keep my head down most of the time.

Tecumseh Trail Marathon — Bloomington, Indiana — December 2nd, 2006

Steve Bremner reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: 3:30
Results: 3:47
Website: http://www.dinoseries.com/run/schedule/2006/marathon.htm

General Summary:
Dashing through the forest along leaf-covered mostly single track trails, countless stream crossings, log hopping, up and down hill after hill after hill, suffering three falls with soft landings on leaves. It was a lot of fun for about two and a half hours — the trail wore me out by then though but I kept going anyway to finish in 3:47:00, which was good enough to win my age group and place 34th overall. Winning time was 3:16.

It rained solid on Thursday resulting in overfilled creeks and causing course officials to make last minute on the fly course changes prior to the race start at 1030 on Saturday morning. We ended up running about four miles on roads about half way into the course in order to avoid a one lane bridge that was well under water. Race day was cold, with high temperatures in the 20’s but it was mostly sunny. I wore tights and long tech shirt and never felt the need to take off my gloves nor my wool hat.

It’s a great race and was one of the 50 marathons in 50 days that Dean Karnaces (author of Ultramarathon Man) ran. Bloomington is vibrant university town with a variety of ethnic restaurants. Friday I enjoyed Tibetan food at the Snow Lion restaurant and Saturday night I savored Afghanistan cuisine at the Samira Restaurant. One could spend weeks in that town eating a different country’s food every night.

My 80th lifetime marathon and 42nd marathon state. Next on the docket is the obscure Otter Creek Trail Marathon near Louisville, Kentucky (state #43) next Sunday, Dec 10th.

Things Done Right:
Kept running. Didn’t walk.Dressed warmly enough to avoid hypothermia.

Things Done Wrong:
Probably started off too fast. I guess I’ll never learn... after 80 marathons I should know better!

California International Marathon — Sacramento, CA — Dec 03, 2006

Richard Hedlind reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: <3.10 (Qualify for Boston)
Results: 3.09.45 (I DID IT!)
Website: http://www.runcim.org

General Summary:
A friend of mine convinced me to run this race with him in an attempt to qualify for Boston. To do that I had to cut off 40 minutes from my PR! I did a lot of speed training and trusted that sea level running would give me an extra push. The extra speed training paid off and sea level running is awesome for sure. I managed to finish within my goal and I am still amazed that I did it. :) I think this PR will stay around for a long, long time.

Things Done Right:
- Hydrated well before and during the race.
- Ate energy gel every 30 minutes.
- Stayed with the race provided 3.10 pace team which made it easier to fight off
the mental tiredness 20+ miles into the race.
- Ate well the week before the race with lots of carbs.

Things Done Wrong:
Traveled too early on Saturday which disturbed my sleep and I was tired Saturday night. Did not sleep well the night before the race. I almost thought I had spoiled my race at that point.

Any Other Stuff:
The race organizer call this “the fastest course in the west.” It is fast with rolling hills and one bigger hill. The course has a net elevation loss of 300 feet. Add to this that the weather was perfect. 40 degrees, sunshine and hardly any wind. Volunteers were yelling out pace times at many of the mile markers and there were bands playing along the course. The organizers should stretch out the aid stations a little bit because they caused a slow down and confusion among
runners.

Durango 50K — Durango, CO — 10/07/06

Sarah Murphy Case reports:
Distance: 50K
Goal: finish my first ultra
Results: finished my first ultra!

General Summary:
This a great first ultra....not too hilly (as compared to PP or where I live in Florissant). Organized from my perspective....easy packet p/u, great volunteer support, awards in a timely manner. The course was beautiful...except that Durango had been pounded with rain for three days. The trail was extremely muddy and in some places it was mud to the ankles...yes, that sticky stuff that makes running a weighting session with the legs. Within half a mile of the finish, the Animas River had overflowed its banks and for those of us vertically challenged, it was cold water up to the thighs...very refreshing!

Things done right: took 5 weeks off from work to continue my 70 mile weeks after running PP Marathon. Took in two gels during the race. (not fond of food in a race) Those gels really helped when I needed them..Stayed at the KOA cabins...very quiet and reasonably clean.

Things done wrong: Nothing....felt great the whole way.
Things to improve on: Get faster! Train with Incline Club when not working on
Sundays.

Tulsa World Route 66 Marathon — Tulsa, Oklahoma — Nov. 19,2006

Diane L. Repasky reports:
Distance: 26.2miles
Goal: 3:40 to PR
Results: 3:50:27
Website: http://www.route66marathon.com

General Summary:
Race run thru the city streets of downtown Tulsa, crossing the Arkansas river 4 times during the race. Race continues on thru neighboring cities and thru historic areas and old town main street shopping areas. Past such sights as the Aquarium and The Creek Nation Casino.

Things Done Right:
Rested, ate right, carb loaded, and drank lots of water in the days before the race. Dressed for the weather which was perfect for race day. Start about 45 degrees and pushed up into the low 50s,mostly sunny. Learning with each race how hard I can push the pace,I know I pushed too hard on this one but will use it as a learning experience. No pressure on this race,it was for fun and to visit my Brother who lives in Tulsa and had never been to a marathon before. He enjoyed the whole experience and has talked of running maybe the half next year.

Things Done Wrong:
Training was too short after just coming off the Pikes Peak Marathon, and having company for 2 weeks in the middle of training. Needed to get a few more long runs in, felt it about the halfway point. Pushed the pace a little too hard, held onto a 3:40 pace until mile 14 and knew I could not maintain. Especially when the course turned back into a 10 mile an hour headwind and more uphill on the return trip to the finish.

Any Other Stuff:
First year for this event. It was a good experience but the course did not have all the entertainment that was advertised and the awards ceremony at the finish never seemed to happen. Other than that it seemed to go off smoothly.
