Good afternoon, ICers!

A Little Bit of Snow and Wind?
As I write this, the news folks are calling this the Blizzard of 2006?! Hope you’re staying safe and warm. The weather is due to clear up later this week, so plan on coming out for a run in what could be any-and-all-conditions on Sunday!

Race Calendar
The race calendar is up! (Find it at the bottom of each newsletter!). Since it is harvested from a variety of websites, please be sure to check the actual website for any information/changes regarding each event. Like last year, the calendar is broken down into local (Springs, Pueblo, Denver) and statewide races from now until the end of the IC season (August 18/19). Submissions or corrections to the calendar are gladly accepted and additions are taken at the editor’s discretion!

Incline Club Sends Best Wishes to Danelle Ballengee
Danelle Ballengee had a scary, almost tragic fall this week, and a fabulous rescue aided by her dog Taz. Many of us know Danelle as the many-time winner of the Pikes Peak Marathon. She is a multi-sport endurance athlete, and is known for her trail/mountain running, and race directing. The Incline Club sends our best to you, Danelle.

VO2 Max Test at UCCS
Howard Brooks writes: I took the VO2 max test that Andy offered through UCCS. Study hard for this one, it is a TOUGH test. What I learned about my physiology helps explain why I am not elbowing Matt out of the way in the last mile of the race. Most importantly, I gained important information about changing my training habits to get faster. This is the best fifty bucks ever spent on my running habit.

(Editor’s note: See the second edition of the Incline Club News this year for information on how to sign up for the testing: http://www.inclineclub.com/newsletter/2007/lr02.htm)

More on Danelle Ballengee’s Rescue
Randy Lindsey writes: The take-away for me (regarding Danelle’s fall) is the importance of carrying survival gear on remote trails, and also letting someone know to look for you if you’re late returning. Many ICer’s run even more remote trails in more severe winter conditions than where Danelle fell.

I usually carry a small fanny pack with a survival blanket which weighs about 1 ounce and provides an amazing amount of warmth (you can get them at most outdoors stores including Mountain Chalet and REI), plus a lighter and a small pocket knife.

12/17/06 Sun: 75 showed for a day which was cold and damp. A damp which made it feel far colder than it actually was. A cold to the bone type cold! There was no sun to be had and with every foot we climbed it got colder. Near the top of Longs Ranch Road we ran into low level clouds making it even damper which might explain why, well, it just felt so freaking cold and damp. For myself, I admit I started off in a rather pissy mood-because of all the cold and damp and the fact that the last couple of days had been nice enough to run in shorts and a T-shirt. Then, about 25 minutes into the run, I thought about those who would stay home today. I picked up the pace and let the fire of my efforts warm my blood. A smile crept across my face as I reveled in the fact that it is days like today where races are won!
