Incline Record?
Mark Ligtenberg writes:
I have a friend that did the incline in 27 mins first time ever on it. I was walking behind him and did it in 38 min. What is the record?

Editor’s response: Any trip up the Incline is a challenge, regardless of pace!

The club no longer runs the Incline. When the club was using it, Matt Carpenter had the fastest recorded time of 18:31. That was in 1998 which, if I’m not mistaken, was before the upper Cog parking lot was built and the Incline was actually longer than it is now.

More information about the use (and now non-use) of the Incline is on the Incline Club website at the bottom of the Thursday “*”s page!

Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon — Nashville — Nov 18, 2007

Steve Bremner reports:
Distance: marathon
Goal: finish
Results: 3:21
Website: http://harpethhillsmarathon.com/

General Summary:
I love this race. The course is all within an urban park on single lane asphalt roads through deciduous forest in full fall colors. The course is up and down with constant rolling hills. Early on I found myself in fifth place, but I could see two leaders in front and two behind them. I caught the middle two, ran with them a while then pushed to catch the leaders. I ran with the leaders for a mile then realized that I just can’t hang with that pace at age 52. I relaxed and let them go. I slowed a bit, but only to 7 minute miles until the ultimate killer — the 2-mile long hill from mile 18 to mile 20. That hill zapped all the zip that was left in my legs. I held one with mostly 7, some 8 minute miles but got passed by three more runners in the last half mile. The post-race massage was the best part of the race.

Results: 9th overall, 1st Masters

Things Done Right:
Kept running

Things Done Wrong:
Too much Hubris

Any Other Stuff:
I love this race. The organization is superb. The long-sleeve tech shirt has no ads and is very attractive. If you are looking to run a race in Tennessee you will not find a better race.

San Antonio Marathon — San Antonio Texas — Nov, 11, 2007

Bruce McMillan reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Sub 4 hour
Results: 4:05
Website: San Antonio Marathon

General Summary:
Used as a training race because I’m going to do the Sunmart Ultra (50K) Dec. 8th. Thought it would be fun to do something a little “epic” so ran an 1/2 marathon on my own on Saturday (felt real good) and then do the S.A. Marathon on Sunday. Felt good during the marathon, could feel the 1/2 marathon in my legs from the start, but not too bad. Did 8:20’s till mile 20 then I wore out. Stopped to do some stretching at mile 20, then had to do a little walking each mile after that. Missed my sub four hour goal by 5 mins., but that is OK since I was using this as a training run. Fairly hot / humid day made it tough on everyone.

Things Done Right:
Took it easy, walked each aid station to get good water / food intake.

Things Done Wrong:
Can’t think of anything. I do wonder what my time would have been if I hadn’t done the 1/2 marathon the day before (and I felt real good then).

Any Other Stuff:
Pretty good course. Next year this race will be the “Rock ‘N Roll” Marathon. Looking forward to that. I’ve already signed up!

Rock Canyon Half-Marathon — Pueblo, CO — Dec 1, 2007

Jim reports:
Distance: 13.1 miles
Goal: 1:50:00
Results: 1:37:16
Website: Souther Colorado Road Runners

General Summary:
The race started with about 2 miles in Pueblo City Park, then down to the Arkansas River Trail. It was basically an out and back course going about 5 ½ miles west to the base of Pueblo Dam and back. It was run on dirt and asphalt trails along the Arkansas River (sorry but there is short distance on concrete). No traffic and great views.

Things Done Right:
This was my first-ever half-marathon as well as the farthest I have ever run, so I wasn’t too sure about my preparation. However, I had run the Incline Club long run the week prior and I felt comfortable that I could complete the race, but I just wasn’t sure at what pace. My first mile was 7:20, as was the next, and I realized I could finish in less than 1:40:00, so I kept the pace and it just worked out. Hopefully this will work as a qualifying time for the Ascent, Wave 1, which is my 2007 goal.

Things Done Wrong:
Not taking that last bathroom break before the start of the run. I ended up stopping at a park bathroom near mile 8.

Any Other Stuff:
I’m not sure this qualifies as an R. However, I’m satisfied that this was my long run for the week! I was very sore Sunday and in no condition to run. I’ll be back with the Incline Club on Dec 9, because I need to build my endurance and distance.

Marathon of the Palm Beaches — West Palm Beach Florida — Dec. 2, 2007

Lisa Soltis reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: 4:30
Results: 4:29
Website: Marathon of the Palm Beaches

General Summary:
26.2 miles is farther than I had remembered

Things Done Right:
even pace (until mile 17)

Things Done Wrong:
unable to maintain my pace after mile 17

Any Other Stuff:
very hot and humid

Distance: 13.1
Goal: 2:30
Results: 2:31:58
Website: Southern Colorado Road Runners
