Howdy ICers!
Hows the training going so far this year? Are you feeling fit from all the trail miles youve been putting in? Well I hope so, and just wanted to say good work to the sixty or more of us who are making it out to the formal runs (even if the formal run is on your own) each week. The hours of running; they DO pay off!
Here is this weeks news!

Dropping out was a thought, but not really an option. For one thing, it made way too much sense . -Mark Will-Weber

Rocky Raccoon 100 mile endurance run Huntsville TX 02/02-03/2008
John Cassidy reports:
Distance: 100 Miles
Goal: Finish/Do the first lap around 4hours/Dont let the leader lap me twice
Results: Finised at 28:00:11/ Lap one was 3:50/He didnt
Website: http://www.tejastrails.com/Rocky.html
General Summary:
My first 100 mile finish! It took two attempts at 100 miles with the first resulting in an 83 mile DNF in Kansas in October 2007. Ran until I couldnt (mile 82 at 20:30) then walked it in. If you can run run. In Kansas I stopped running at mile 58 (when it got dark) and paid for it. So I attempted to delay to walking as long as possible. David started walking at mile 54 and dropped at mile 70. Walking is hard on your body and you cant go for 12 hours only walking.
Things Done Right:
Trained with David Hendrix (who is faster than me). Deviated from the Incline club work-outs (too much snow and climbing) and ran the Santa Fe trail. Started runs at 4:30AM in Palmer Lake and ran/walked home (Palmer Park and Powers). Started some runs with a crossing of the Academy just before dusk with night running to home. I got used to running at night. I got used to walking when tired. A trotting run is easier than walking but I worked on the death march. Still, during the race I tried to avoid walking anything longer than two minutes until I couldnt run any more at all (mile 82).
Didnt run with David during the race sometimes I was in front, sometime he was. We feel good/bad at different times and need to take advantage of the good times to put down some miles quickly. At a 50 miler last summer we paid for waiting for each other at different times by missing a cut-off by 10 minutes feeling good. Run with whos next to you not who you came with.
Things Done Wrong:
It got to 70 degrees on Saturday No way to train for that in Colorado this winter. I should fork over the money for a set of shoes a 1/2 size larger for anything over 50 miles. My feet hurt.
Any Other Stuff:
Its a 100 Mile Trail race with a concurrent 50 mile run. Fairly flat with lots of roots to trip you, about 4 miles per loop are on dirt roads. Its set up with 5 (20 mile loops) and aid station every 3 to 4 miles. Run by veterans and set-up for beginner 100 milers (thats me). This means that they wont tolerate whining and will kick you out of an aid stations. They are called aid stations and not rest stations for a reason. My longest stay was at mile 90 for ten minutes I was dizzy and took some S-caps to fix it. Still only 66% of starters finish (168 out of 252) On a scale of 1 to 10 for difficultly of 100 mile races I would put Rocky Raccoon at a 2. Hardrock being a 10. Leadville a 8. Kansas an 3. Since altitude kicks my but (I DNFd 2007s Pikes Peak Marathon), I dont think I will try for Leadville.
I saw an armadillo he was mad.
