Why Do I Run..
Alan Johnson writes:
As to why I run? Ive been running for over 50 yrs (started in 1956) and still enjoy the opportunity to commune with nature, test myself against old age and those youngins that seem to be everywhere, with their new shoes, altimeters and heart rate monitors to see how theyre doing.
I run for me and how that expresses the who I am, not what I am. Having run since the days when people peered out of their window shades as if to ward off evil spirits and hiding behind close doors thinking it could be a deadly disease-those individuals could be pushing up flowers now. Its time to ponder and let the mind rest; almost spiritual for many; a time to be alone with the self and gauge what is important in your life and at the same time enjoy a free ticket on the Nature Express. Setting goals and visualizing outcomes (possibilities?) are at no cost to the consumer(us) and have many rewards and benefits.
Having run the very 1st Peachtree Road Race in 1970 (after my draft physical) and finishing 9th overall(150 started-110 finished),2nd in 20-25 age group(some guy named Jeff Galloway was 1st overall and in age-group); Im proud to be a member of The Original 110 Club"(the first 110 finishers-the other 40 dropped because of the heat of 90 deg and humidity 90% that Atlanta is famous for!) I have been back for the 25th and 30th runnings of Peachtree, respectively. Im planning on doing the 40th. WE were part of the impetus that started the Running Revolution"-along with the Buddy Edelens, Frank Shorters, and Jim Ryuns. I run because of the freedom and the pleasure it provides;the spirituality of ones one-ness.
We run because- we are....

I bake some goodies for my coffee shops and I thought I might bring some to share this Sunday. They are called LPODs (little packets of decadence) and the main ingredients are Oats, peanut butter, chocolate chips & raisins. They are awesome trail bars!

R REPORTS:
***********************************************
Frisco Gold Rush 10K and 20K Nordic Races Frisco Nordic Center Feb 03, 2008
Andy Kovats reports:
Distance: 10K Classic, 20K Skate
Goal: Improve on Last Years Results
Results: moved up one place in 10K, 10 places in 20K
Website: http://www.emgcolorado.com/race_salomon.html
General Summary:
With 25% less training this year I managed comparable or improved results over last year, though the field size was down, possibly due to Super Bowl Sunday.
Things Done Right:
Stayed in races mentally in spite of some silly errors, and rested up instead of doing a hard workout the previous day as in last year. One can still learn a lot from a light year of training as it brings out weaknesses (lower back got sore in classic race for example). New rollerskis bought late in the fall helped make the most of very limited training time this year.
Things Done Wrong:
I apparently took my stupid pills in the morning as I managed to grab 2 left gloves heading over to the race and didnt have time to go back. With a +5F start for the classic race and not being as tough as the Russians (who often ski without gloves), I had to waste valuable time struggling to turn one of the gloves inside out to wear on my right hand. I only had a couple minutes to warm up and then had issues with the inside-out glove wanting to slip off my hand during the 10K race. Losing 20% of ones double poling effectiveness is not the way to do well in a classic technique race! By the time the 20K skate took off, it had warmed up and I could settle down and ski much better. There was a power outage in Frisco the night before and I lost valuable waxing time, plus before that I had watched an intense movie on TV rather than focusing on the races.
Any Other Stuff:
Both courses were quite hilly this year, with the 20K being typically brutal (hills on the Buzzsaw loop are about like the ones in Garden of the Gods). The beetle killed pines have been cleared on the first part of the trail making some of the snow more exposed to sun and wind and probably slower compared to previous years.

Sedona Half Marathon Sedona, AZ Feb 9, 2008
Jack Ramsey/Blake Ramsey reports:
Distance: 13.1 mi
Goal: 2 hr Jack, 1:40 for Blake(age16)
Results: 1:55 Jack, 1:37 Blake
Website: http://sedonamarathon.com
General Summary:
This is truly a beautiful area of Arizona, huge red sandstone rock formations make the Garden look tame by comparison! Race was 100% pavement, on rolling hills, again, just like running the Garden. Temp. at race start was lower 40s, mid 50s by noon; perfect race weather! We decided to do this race as a qualifier for Blake for the Ascent, knowing we should be able to at least get him into the second wave; possibly qualify for the first wave(he did).
Things Done Right:
Blake and I have been making most of the Sunday long runs, we both ran the Garden 10 mile race course on the Sunday prior to the race to get some pavement, and to feel what the race pace would be like. Not sure if this helped, but figured it couldnt hurt. Blake ran the entire race with George Greco (age60!) which benefited both of them, as they both helped motivate each other at different point during the race.
Things Done Wrong:
May run more pavement miles before doing another half on asphalt, both of us suffered from extremely sore legs after the race.
Comments on Calculator:
Blake/George pace:7:25 mine 8:31.
Any Other Stuff:
Team Co. Springs represented the area well, Blake took second in age group, 23/517; George took first,24/517; I took first at 84/517.

2/17/2008 Sun: Hell! That is the only way to describe todays run. Tons of ice! Tons of snow! Cold! You name it and it conspired against us. But 55 of us went home knowing that we fought the elements today and it was a good feeling.
2/10/2008 Sun: For only the second time this season less than 60 runners showed. 57 came out today for a trip up and down the rather icy Barr Trail. Well, icy up to No Name Creek and then lots, and lots of snow.
