Incline Club,

Here are our upcoming workouts:

Thursday, July 31, 5:45pm — Hydro Street
Warm up from Memorial Park in time to get to Hydro Street. Do a 30 minute tempo run up the Barr Trail. Run easy back down the Barr Trail do 8 Hydro Street hill repeats.

Sunday, August 3
Choose your poison:
1) 7:00am @ PP Toll Booth: Elk Park to summit via Barr Camp
2) 7:00am @ PP Toll Booth: 3-2-1 from summit
3) 7:30am @ Memorial Park: Take COG to Mt View, run to Summit via Barr Camp

Taper time is coming!
We’re within just a couple of weeks of the Pikes Peak races! You are probably thinking about your taper for your race!

Here is an excerpt from “Training for the Ascent and Marathon on Pikes Peak” by Matt Carpenter and Jim Freim:

“A good taper has two parts. The first part is how many days you reduce your training .... we start our taper two weeks before the Pikes Peak races. The two weeks is short enough so the loss of training time is minimal, but allows us to be ready for a hard effort. The second part of a taper is how much to cut back your training. Again, if you cut back too much, you culd lose some fitness. If you cut back too little, you will go into the race overly tired.”

The guide goes on to remind us that different folks reduce training by different amounts, but that “this is cutting back on the quantity of training, NOT the quality.” i.e. Continue your quality workouts, at the same pace you’ve been doing them (not faster), just reduce your mileage!

Hopefully you have had a chance to practice your taper with shorter races this summer so that you have an idea of what works for your unique factors such as fitness level, age, quality/quantity of training, etc.
