Subject: Incline Club News V13 TH #17 LR #35 — Change in the Sunday Morning Run!

Good Evening Incline Club!

The snow is totally gone, the time to the PPA/PPM is quickly approaching... There are only 3 more Sunday runs until race weekend!

Due to changes in the Pikes Peak Highway price structure and starting time, we are _not_ going to be meeting behind the tollbooth this year. See below for the new plan.

***********************************************
NEXT RUN: Interval (Thursday), Fielders Choice (Sunday)
***********************************************
Thursday, July 23, 5:45pm — Hydro Street+
Warm up from Memorial Park in time to get to Hydro Street. Do 30 minutes of 1 min hard, 1 min easy up the Barr Trail. Easy back down the Barr Trail. Do 7 Ruxton Ave hill repeats.

Sunday, July 26, 7:30am — Memorial Park
1) Run from the bottom to the top via the Barr Trail or
2) COG train to Mt View. Mt View to the top via Barr Camp or
3) Elk Park to the top via Barr Camp or
4) Summit down and up and down and up and down and up (3-2-1).

***********************************************
Sunday’s Run Schedule
***********************************************
From here until race weekend, the remaining Sunday runs will offer the following options:

1) Run from the bottom to the top via the Barr Trail
2) COG train to Mt View. Mt View to the top via Barr Camp or
3) Elk Park to the top via Barr Camp or
4) Summit down and up and down and up and down and up (3-2-1).

Unlike last year, we will meet at Memorial park and sign in there. Once signed in, those doing #3 and 4 can then carpool to the top. We are making this change for the following reasons.

a) The Highway does not even open until 7:30
b) Sign-in was a mess with 3 possible locations and a few different times available
c) It is faster to get 1 car through the tollbooth than 4
d) Folks with passes can use them to get a carload through in one shot
e) Folks doing #1 and 2 can try and ‘reserve’ a ride off the top from another IC’er if they don't like the idea of hitching a ride

***********************************************
Pikes Peak Highway Hours and Fee Schedule
***********************************************
For those who glossed over it, note that the Pikes Peak Highway opens at 7:30am, not 7:00

Also, they no longer offer the unlimited ride passes. You have the following options:
1) Pay $10 a person
2) Pay $35 a carload
2) Purchase a 14 person pass for $100 ($7.14 per person)
3) Purchase a 5 car pass for $100 ($20 per carload)

The passes are good for 1 year from the date of issue.

Also, you can use the 14 person pass to transport more than 1 person up at a time. If you want to drive 3 folks up, they will simply punch the card 3 times for that trip (and if they are nice the two passengers will fork over $7 to the owner of the pass :-)

Barr Trail Snow Tracker
***********************************************
Its gone. Totally gone.

Weekend Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: 80+ deg and 20% chance of early storms dropping to 11% after 6pm.

Sunday: Mid 60’s in Manitou to start. Low 40’s on the summit.

Note that the summit forecasts are more or less worthless this far out. See http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?w0=t&w1=td&w2=hi&w3=sfcwind&w3u=1&w4=sky&w5=pop&w6=rh&w7=thunder&w8=rain&w12u=1&AheadHour=48&FcstType=graphical&textField1=38.84133&textField2=-105.03882&site=all&unit=0&dd=0&bw=0&BackDay.x=51&BackDay.y=10&BackDay=0 the night before the run for a more accurate guess.

Race Reports
***********************************************
This week, we have a straggler from the SRTR, another flood of BTMR results and Eddie tearing it up in Vail.

Summer Round-Up — Colorado Springs — 07/05/2009
(5) Barr Trail Mountain Race — Manitou Springs — 07/12/2009
Vail Half Marathon — Vail — 07/19/2009

***********************************************
Summer Round-Up — Colorado Springs — 07/05/2009

Tracey Anderson reports:
Distance: 12K
Goal: improve over last year’s time
Results: 50 seconds slower
Website: http://www.summerroundup.com/

General Summary:
Evil little race in Bear Creek Park.

Things Done Right:
Paced myself pretty well.

Things Done Wrong:
Downhill form stunk, giving me some very sore quads the next day.

***********************************************
Barr Trail Mountain Race — Manitou Springs — 07/12/2009

Randy Lindsey reports:
Distance: There and back again
Goal: Finish without falling
Results: 2:22:39 and complete set of skin
Website: http://www.runpikespeak.com

General Summary:
Fun to see so many IC friends as I usually do my workouts on other trails these days (closer to home, and with dog). Palmer HS aid station at No Name was awesomely enthusiastic, and the girls were really cute in togas ;-) Wonderfully organized race — thanks everybody!

Things Done Right:
Didn’t fall. Didn’t get in Matt’s way. Kept up a good steady pace both ways. My walk is as fast as many people’s run on the uphills. Ran a minute faster than last year.

Things Done Wrong:
Caught a light case of Swine Flu from my wife a couple weeks before the race. Need more practice with racing downhill, and solving stomach troubles. Lost 3 places in my age group from last year despite running a minute faster. What’s up with that?

***********************************************
Barr Trail Mt Race — Manitou Springs — July 12 09

Fred Baxter reports:
Distance: 12 Miles
Goal: 2:08
Results: 2:10:19

General Summary:
Run to Barr camp and then back down

Things Done Right:
Kept running even though I felt like Crap

Things Done Wrong:
??? did not run fast enough to get Mike Sandlin Good job Mike

Any Other Stuff:
Barr Trail was in good shape?? What a Great Race The Best. The Tshirts are very nice The awards are the best. I think Matt and his crew do a very good job putting this race on.

***********************************************
Barr Trail — Manitou — 07/12/2009

Melissa Marr reports:
Distance: 12ish
Goal: Beat last year’s time
Results: added 7 minutes. OUCH!
Website: http://www.runpikespeak.com/index.htm

General Summary:
Nice day, but then it got hot. Suffered from miserable stomach cramps.

Things Done Right:
Trained with group. Did track work and hill work.

Things Done Wrong:
Guess I need to work on electrolytes! Cramped 1/2 way up the trail and by the time I was coming down, my entire stomach was a big cramp! Brought tears (not of joy) to my eyes.

Any Other Stuff:
Gotta figure out this electrolyte issue before next month’s big race.

***********************************************
BTMR — Manitou Springs, CO — 07/12/2009

Tracey Anderson reports:
Distance: 12.6 mi
Goal: improve over last year’s time
Results: 5 minutes faster
Website: http://www.runpikespeak.com/

General Summary:
We all know the drill inside and out--halfway up the Peak to camp and back down. A little hotter than last year.

Things Done Right:
Kept a consistent effort both up and down. Hydrated at every aid station.

Things Done Wrong:
I can’t complain. For a change.

Any Other Stuff:
How can you not love this race? The course gives runners challenges, rewards and fun by the barrel load and in turn gives it all back to the community in cash.

***********************************************
BTMR — Manitou Springs — 07/12/2009

Andy Cole reports:
Distance: 12.575 miles
Goal: Finish ahead of 3:30 cut-off
Results: Finished/ 3:06
Website: http://www.runpikespeak.com

General Summary:
My first time doing a race on Barr Trail. Great race — not as crowded as I thought it would be. I did much better than I thought I would.

Things Done Right:
Pushed steadily up — made it to Barr Camp faster by 12 minutes than I had before. Pushed myself harder than normal on the initial down after Barr Camp — covered several miles before I really started to get tired. Helped me mentally.

Things Done Wrong:
Nothing I can think of — good race for me.

Any Other Stuff:
Great race — great aid stations — loved the water misters.

***********************************************
Vail Half Marathon — Vail — 07/19/2009

Eddie Baxter reports:
Distance: 14.5 miles
Goal: 1st age group
Results: 1st age group
Website: http://vailrec.com

General Summary:
First time running this race. Set a good pace to the top. Was able to pass a few runners on the way up. then push the last up and down 4 and a half miles to finish 11th overall.

Things Done Right:
Train, drink, eat and sleep.

Things Done Wrong:
?
