Subject: Incline Club News V13 TH #20 LR #38 — PPA/M Volunteers Needed

Good Evening Incline Club!

This is it. The past 37 weeks of hard work have come down to this. Given the amount of time and effort I’ve seen folks put in this year, I’m sure many of you will be pleasantly surprised by your results. Just remember to take a deep breath and run your race. Pacing is everything. Don’t worry about the guy in front of you since chances are he will be burned out by the top of the W’s :~).

As we all know, these races would simply not be possible if it was not for the hundreds of volunteers who give their time so that we can run. If you or somebody you know can volunteer one or both days, we are still in need of a number of people in several areas. It is also one of the best way to get some of the best seats in the house. See the volunteer section below for details.

Those of you who are running in the Leadville Trail 100, you get an extra week. Good luck to all of you and don’t forget about the IC party next Thursday. Also, please consider volunteering for this year’s PPA/PPM so that you can avoid the urge to go for a really long run and risk your taper for next week’s race :-)

If you had one shot
Or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture it
Or just let it slip?

Volunteers Needed for the Ascent and Marathon:
***********************************************
As somebody who volunteered for last year’s marathon, I can attest to the mind boggling number of people who complete the seemingly endless series of tasks that need to be done so that on race day the event goes off as smoothly as the weather will allow.

If you or somebody you know can help out, please go to http://www.thetcr.com/volunteer.asp and fill out the volunteer form. Please use the comments field to specify the times and dates that you are available so that they can jumpstart the initial assignments.

Since many of you are very familiar with the summit, please take special note of any high-altitude slots that may need to be filled.

Friday: Various needs from aid station set up; traffic control; Park set up with table and chairs; set up City Hall for program, etc. Help is basically needed all day long.

Saturday: Operations needs help with traffic and crowd control in the morning, pre-race setup (sound system, loading aid station trucks, etc), Sweat Check, Summit, Cirque, A-Frame, Ruxton and Incline Overlook aid stations, etc.

Sunday: Operations throughout day. Major help is needed with traffic and crowd control from 5:30am till 3pm. pre-race setup, sweat check, Ruxton and Incline Overlook aid stations.

Shifts can start as early as 4:30am, but most morning shifts start between 5:15 and 6:45. Please specify your available start times unless you really want to be joining me at 4:30am on Sunday. :-) Mid-Morning shifts can start anywhere from 8am till noon, and afternoon shifts start around noon. Some jobs such as Ruxton traffic control can be very flexible if we get enough folks to pitch in.

***********************************************
End of Season Schedule:
***********************************************
The Thursday run will start at Memorial Park in Manitou, _not_ Hydro Street. The idea is to do a time check from the start to Ruxton (Ascent Runners) or Hydro Street (Marathon Runners). For most of us, the idea is to discover just how fast you should _not_ be running on race day :-)

This weekend we have the races. Be there on time and ready to give it all you got. The weather looks good so there should be no excuses this time :-)

Next Thursday will be the annual Incline Club end of season party. The party will start at 5:45 at Mansions Park. This is the pavilion located directly across the street from Memorial park where we start our Sunday Morning Runs. Everybody who is associated with the club in any way as well as their Friends & Family are welcome. You do not have to be a runner in one of this year’s races. Further Details will be sent out in next week’s newsletter.

Spencer Johnston Writes:
***********************************************
I went up and down the last mile of Barr Trail today in preparation for the Ascent. The transformation of this mile from last week was astounding due to superior trail maintenance performed by whom, I do not know. The rock work and new/repaired rock steps were very professional and just right for ease in doing this last mile. Thanks to all that did this work and especially to the supervisors/workers that had the know how to properly fix this needed repair area.

(FYI: Spencer is the one who has done a lot of the work down low this season.)

Sunday/Thursday *’s and Race Reports:
***********************************************
In order to prep for next week’s IC Awards, please submit all outstanding race reports and requests for Sunday/Thursday stars by this Thursday.

Also, please try and have your PPA/PPM Race report in by Tuesday evening so that I can get the newsletter out at a reasonable time :-)

Race Reports
***********************************************
It’s the calm before the storm. Only David reported in about how he got a huge rush in Leadville.

Leadville Silver Rush. — Leadville CO — 07/26/2009

David Hendrix reports:
Distance: 50 miles.
Goal: To finish.
Results: 10 hours 40 min.

General Summary:
A good training run for the Leadville 100.

Things Done Right:
I was able to run well on the downhill after the turnaround. I remembered to bring the electrolytes and salt tablets so I did not cramp in the legs. Having a hotel room and a hot shower immediately after the race because it was raining a lot and I was soaked and freezing at the finish.

Things Done Wrong:
I don’t feel that I made any major mistakes.
