Subject: Incline Club V14 LR #10 CSU Watershed Update
Good Evening Incline Club!
It's the 10th run of the season! Yes, we have hit double digits. We are also over 1/4th of the way to the PPA/PPM, so if you havent started getting serious, you may want to start now :-)
This week we have an update on the Colorado Springs Utilities Watershed Access Project and it may have an impact on one of our favorite trails.

and bring it to the run and they will be delivered to the COW to save everyone the trip.

South Slope Watershed Access
***********************************************
For those who are looking for more spots to run, it appears that the South Slope of Pikes Peak may soon be on the list of spots to go. Colorado Springs Utilities has announced their concept plan for opening up the South Slope.
As an interesting side effect, our favorite trail that is certified uphill both ways, Ute Pass Trail, is scheduled to be reworked so that it is not such a nightmare from a drainage standpoint. So enjoy that initial hill up to the water treatment plant because it will soon be re-routed to avoid that entire area.

A link (which takes a while to load) to the concept plan can be found at http://www.csu.org/residential/environment/recreation/watershed/concept/item4273.pdf

It may snow tonight, so all bets are off :-)

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Yes, there will be weather. It appears to be in the upper 20s to start, mid 20s by the time we get to noname, and then maybe mid to upper 20s by the time we get to Barr Camp. Of course, there is a small system moving in on Monday that may produce some cloud cover and wind. If it is late then we should have a nice day, otherwise, well, it is still January.

Suggested Course Overview:
***********************************************
This weeks suggested run is Barr Camp. Its everybodys favorite local trail. Stay on Ruxton when you pass Hydro (1.25 miles), go up a nasty hill, past the gate, turn right, join up with Barr Trail, keep going up, then go up some more, till you see the crazy folks doing the incline and then keep going up till you hit the top of the Ws (1.8ish miles from hydro). Then it is back up, up and more up but you can catch a breather before you go under the rock arch, then go up then up some more till you hit Noname Creek (4 miles total). If you have anything left keep going up till you hit Bobs road, where you get a slight downhill then up down and up till you hit the 7.8 to go sign. Then it is a simple down up down up down up up up till you hit the 1/2 mile to Barr Camp sign. Then it is just up up up till you get to the little cabin in the woods where you can take a quick rest before you get to go down down down :-)
WARNING: If it will take you more than 4 hours or so to finish, do not attempt the full route. Shorten it to just noname, just the 7.8 sign or some other variant. Once again, is often better to go shorter and harder rather than slower and longer. If you find yourself walking the entire route, try doing a shorter course and run short sections of it, say 1 to 2 minutes at a time along the level or downhill parts. Each week make the sections slightly longer till you find yourself running more than you are walking. (Just dont try to run the super steep parts, that first hill after hydro is made for walking :-)

Race Reports:

This week, David qualifies for Boston and Anita gets lazy (but at least she remembered her running shorts).

Avalon 50 Mile Run Catalina Island, CA 01/16/10
Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: finish
Results: 10:13:54
Website: http://www.avalon50.com
General Summary:
This was my fifth time running this challenging, hilly course. Every year those island hills seem to get steeper.
Things Done Right:
My original plan was to race this 50 mile run as I did last weekend, but I knew stepping off the boat that my legs were in no shape to compete after hammering them to a PR on 50 miles of pavement 7 days ago, so I just hung back with my friends, talked smack about a few people, came up with a name for my neighbors yappy dog (Death Wish), gossiped, I mean shared, with my girl friends, and just had fun. I also remembered my running shorts with the built in underwear! The weather was perfect! I hope those going out to Catalina in March will have the same great weather we had.
Things Done Wrong:
I could have ran it faster, but was just feeling tired and lazy.

Rock n roll Arizona Phoenix 1/17/2010
David Hendrix reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: Under 3:30:59
Results: 3:27:41 and a boston qualifier!!!!!
General Summary:
This race starts in downtown Phoenix and goes through Scottsdale and ends in tempe by the Sun Devil Stadium, all of which is on black top streets.
Things Done Right:
Running speed intervals for about a year and running longer distances. I also a Garmin Forerunner to keep me on pace. I also took about 1000mg of Ibuprofen, this was to help with leg fatigue and keep me on pace.
Things Done Wrong:
Being over trained. I ran a marathon in December and was hitting it hard with the running in the last few weeks and was having pain in the shins and knees. I also took vitamin I this is bad for the innards, I also listed it in the right column.
Any Other Stuff:
I saw Senator John McCain at the starting line. I was inspired to run well. He was the man that never quit.
