Good Evening Incline Club!

Looks like we got some snow this week, which should make the trail nice and smooth for this Sunday’s run.

NEXT RUN: Barr Camp
***********************************************
Sunday, Feb 14, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run to Barr Camp and back via the Barr Trail

***********************************************
THIS WEEK’S QUOTE:
***********************************************
When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.
- Henry Ford

Barr Trail Conditions Report
***********************************************
We got some snow this week, and the initial reports are that the trail is like running on carpet. Snow packed the entire way. Of course, that is subject to change by Sunday but we can all hope, can’t we?

***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
The fortune tellers are saying that it will be in the mid 20’s to start, mid 20’s by the time most of us get to Noname (sub 20’s for the fast folks) and then mid 20’s when we get to Barr Camp. Then it should warm up a bit as you head back down.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week Tim runs a half in sunny and warm Arizona. Meanwhile down in Texas, Melissa and Sean went for a short 50 mile ‘training run’. Melissa found a good use for a mother in law while Sean discovered that just because its an ultra does not mean you have to run slow. Oddly enough, they both finished within 9 seconds of each other.

Sedona Half-Marathon — Sedona, Arizona — 02/06/2010

Tim Virgo reports:
Distance: 13.1 miles
Goal: Less than 2 hours.
Results: 1h:56m. 3rd in M55-59 division
Website: http://www.sedonamarathon.com

General Summary:
Out-and-back over gently rolling roads through beautiful scenery of red mesas and buttes. Weather sun/overcast, 57.

Things Done Right:
Training: Consistent IC Sunday runs. Consistent week-day cross-training grinds.
Nutrition: Minimal food before race. Then kept stoked up on Shot-Bloks throughout the run. Drank at every aid station. Didn’t slow down at aid stations.
Pace: started slow and then passed people for the whole race.

Things Done Wrong:
Ran into the road on an excessively flat section. Need to pay more attention on the easy bits.
Pace: I usually pace myself by my pulse rate, but — duh — at 4500’ my pulse rate was way too low to be useful, and I had no idea what mins/mile I was going to be able to run.

Rocky Raccoon — Huntsville, TX — 02.06.2010

Melissa Marr reports:
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: finish as training run
Results: 7th female overall-PR 8.54
Website: http://www.tejastrails.com/Rocky.html

General Summary:
The week prior to the race, rain was abundant. The course was predictably muddy and rooty. Mother Nature was quite nice to us. We had a great day for racing with 40-50 degree weather and sunny skies. There was a record number of people this year with about 320 running the 50 mile and 375 running the 100 mile.
My plan was to just use this as a training run for my first 100 at the end of March, but once the start was given, I felt the competitive bug in me jump. I ran the first lap pretty quick. The next lap was slightly slower, but that wasn’t much fun. So, on my final lap I decided to just see what I had left and went balls to the wall and finished strong. It worked out well as I PR’d with an 8.54. That is over an hour faster than my previous AND this course is much more technical. I had a great race.

Things Done Right:
Fueled and hydrated appropriately. Never had a queasy stomach or any other stomach malady. :) I also remembered to wear shorts and sunscreen.
Got my mother in law to crew me. Her neurotic behavior finally came in handy. She was great at reminding me to hydrate, eat and take my electrolytes. She even said to let her know if I need her for my Leadville 100. What a great mother in law!!

Things Done Wrong:
Should have gotten new shoes and broken them in before this race. Instead, my feet told me during the second lap that I REALLY needed to pitch them and get some new ones. I will be purchasing 2 pairs this weekend.

Any Other Stuff:
I emailed Mr. Aggie like he said to, but he didn’t respond. :( Thought he’d be out to cheer, but apparently Aggies can’t operate email. :) I did see fellow ICer Daniel running as well. I hope his experience was a great as mine.

Rocky Raccoon 50-mile Trail Race — Huntsville, TX — 02/06/2010

Sean Kute reports:
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: 9-10 hours
Results: 08:54:16 ------- 36th place overall
Website: http://www.tejastrails.com/Rocky.html

General Summary:
I ran almost every step and beat my goal. I was able to run the last 2 miles or so at breakneck speed which makes me wonder if I didn’t run the race too conservatively.

Things Done Right:
Good conservative pacing. No problems with fueling. No alligator attacks.

Things Done Wrong:
Probably could have pushed harder.

Any Other Stuff:
After I was done with my race I took a break and then paced a friend for his last lap of the 100-miler.
