Incline Club V14 LR #16 — Daylight Savings Time Begins!

Subject: Incline Club V14 LR #16 — Daylight Savings Time Begins!

Good Evening Incline Club!

We are less than a week away from the PPA/M registration, so let's get in the groove of things by running to Barr Camp. For those who didn’t get up high enough last weekend, the fog bank topped out at 8200 ft, and it was quite the sight to see once you punched through it.

Also, remember that Daylight “Savings” Time starts this Sunday, so remember to set your clocks ahead one hour.

Barr Trail Conditions Report:
***********************************************
Last week it was dirt, ice and some packed snow to Noname, and then nicely packed snow from Noname to Barr Camp. This week we are going to get hit by a few small storms so the trail conditions are subject to change with little notice.

***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
Expect low 30’s to start, low 30’s when you get to Noname, low 30’s when you get to Barr Camp and low 40’s when you finish. They are calling for a 33% chance of snow but the system is questionable at best and anything is possible at this time.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week, Eddie and Randy report on their attempt at the stair-master, Andy discovers that if life gives you snow, use skis, Donald decides to turn up the speed in Pueblo and Anita reveals that she is running Badwater again and picks a race that is the polar opposite of that venue to use as a training run :~)

Fight For Air Stair Climb — Denver — 02/28/2010

Eddie Baxter reports:
Distance: 56 floors
Goal: 7:30
Results: 7:46

General Summary:
1098 steps. read Mike Eversons race report for all the fun details.

Things Done Right:
Went out hard

Things Done Wrong:
When it started to hurt i must have slowed down cause i couldn’t catch Shawn or Fred.

Any Other Stuff:
Had a great time.

Fight For Air Stair Climb — Denver — 02/28/2010

Randy Triplett reports:
Distance: 56 Floors
Goal: Under 9 minutes
Results: 7 minutes 51 seconds
Website: http://runtherepublic.com

General Summary:
A great day for racing. Will do it again next year for sure.

Things Done Right:
Ran out at a good pace. Ran the first 11 floors then went to double steps and paced with the runner behind me.

Things Done Wrong:
Had a restart at 8:00 am because of a door shut and locked on the second floor but other than that everything went well.

Any Other Stuff:
This was my first race in many years.

Govenor’s Cup 30K XC Skate Race — Devil’s Thumb Ranch Nordic Center — 1/30/2010

Andy Kovats reports:
Distance: 30K (course was short ~2K)
Goal: 1) No crashes, 2) have fun, 3) finish about 30% back from leaders
Results: accomplished 1) and 2), finished about 35% back from leader
Website: http://www.grandnordic.org (posts results)

General Summary:
Thin early season snow limited the options for setting the course, but the coverage was adequate and warm temperatures made for a nice fast course of 2 14Km laps. Each lap was about 1/3 flat or easy uphill followed by 1/3 moderately steep hills and the last 1/3 a flat or downhill cruise. I could not retrieve the results but I think about 200 people were in the 30K event and I was about 32nd overall.

Things Done Right:
Trained a lot with rollerskis and time on snow when possible, wore a new “compression” suit which purports to increase power by 12% which I knew was too good to be true. While it did not seem to make me faster, it did seem my muscles were less worked and recovered better after the race.

Things Done Wrong:
might have taken off a bit too fast in the race to avoid getting stuck behind people on the uphill sections, got a speeding ticket in SW Denver on the way up to the race

American Birkebeiner XC Ski Marathon — Cable to Hayward Wisconsin — 2/27/2010

Andy Kovats reports:
Distance: 50Km
Goal: 1) have fun, 2) improve over last year
Results: Definitely had fun, placed 366 among men vs 375 last year
Website: http://www.birkie.com/

General Summary:
The “Birkie” is N. America’s largest cross country ski event, with about 8000 people roughly split between the full and half distance events. There are also divisions for skate technique and classic. The race profile kind of reminds one of the lower jaw of a T-Rex, as the whole course is sharp hills, with one flat section of 2km across a lake near the finish. This year the conditions were super fast. My GPS registered a max speed of 34mph on one of the downhills and overall it was about as much fun as 8000 people in Lycra could legally have.

Things Done Right:
Training went very well this season as I stuck to my plan, dropped about 6 lbs which I figure goes straight to VO2 max, got in several tune up races in Colorado and on a very important note avoided respiratory infections all season. I was inspired by the study of runners who ate lacto-bacillus containing foods like yogurt and cottage cheese and kept up daily servings, and this is the first time in many years I recall being so healthy.

Things Done Wrong:
On one of the screamer downhills about half way through I caught an edge and crashed head first. After sliding to a stop on my face I shouted a few bad words as I dusted myself off and then realized I was in front of a large gallery of spectators. I probably lost 1 minute and 25 places directly from this fall, but when I got going again I realized I had damaged a strap which then caused my pole to flop in my hand the rest of the race and further took off my mental edge. This was my 10th Birkie finish and the first crash I recall having, but the race was still a blast. Unfortunately my skis did not run as fast as they should as I lost 1-2 places on most of the big downhills, possibly due to choosing too stiff a ski. Even on hard conditions the course gets chopped up by hundreds of skiers in front of you and I might have benefited from a softer ski.

Pueblo Chieftain Spring Runoff — Pueblo, CO — 03/07/2010

Donald Hawkins reports:
Distance: 10 miles
Goal: 1:10:00
Results: 1:09:40, 1st in age group, 12th overall
Website: http://www.socorunners.org/races/results/SRO_2010.htm

General Summary:
Ran it last year in 1:15:12 so thought this year I could break 1:10. Also ran the Garden in almost the exact same time last year, so maybe this year I can get a 1:10 there too!!!!

Things Done Right:
Won my age group!!!!!
Paced just under my goal of 7 minute miles. Was 30 seconds under my goal at half way and ended up 20 seconds under.
Used my road flats instead of switching to training shoes which I usually do just before a race.
Started picking people off after 10k/10 mile split.
Didn’t convince myself to slow down the last few miles as usual.
Ran my fastest 5 mile, 10k, and 7 mile splits since I was in Iraq in 08.

Things Done Wrong:
Didn’t train for it at all. (Not specifically anyway. The Sunday IC runs did me a lot of good.)
In pacing, I kept slowing down when I found myself running at a 6:30 pace, usually slowing down too much. I wish I would have just stayed with what the legs wanted, but then again I might have slowed towards the end.

Any Other Stuff:
I thought the weather was perfect, 37ish at the start. Others complained of the cold. I guess they don’t make it to many of our Sunday runs!
I usually only drink water, but was given Gatorade almost every time, so lets just say I was a sticky mess!
Was easier running it for the 2nd time as I knew the course unlike last year.

Carl Touchstone 50 Mile Ultramarathon — Laurel, MS — 03/06/2010

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 50 mud filled miles
Goal: “adjusted” as the race progressed
Results: 10:46:50 3rd female overall
Website: http://www.ms50.com

General Summary:
This race was used as another training run for the Badwater 135 I am running in July. YES, I know I said I would never run it again! Usually it is warm, in the mid 80’s, but this year it was near freezing at the start. It only got worse from there........

Things Done Right:
Managed to get all my gels in the stupid little baggy the airlines make you use. Good thing, I needed them all, since the endless water crossings and swamp crossings with mud up to my knees sometimes really slowed me down, nearly two hours slower than last year. But hearing those men with their southern accents made it all worth it. Only in the south, would you be standing in mud up to your knees, and have some guy behind you drawl,” well now, that ain’t very lady like now is it?” NO, it wasn’t! and I am going to have to have my nails done or buy another pair of stilettos to make myself feel better. I also had fun and enjoyed my surroundings. The pine trees in the south seem to stretch up into the sky forever, and hearing tree frogs was a nice treat given the tough winter we’ve been having. I did push myself on the last two loops, and caught the woman who finished in front of me last year, which put me into third, although I am kind of embarrassed of my slower time. However, I didn 46;t want to get hurt given I have another 100 miler coming up in two weeks.

Things Done Wrong:
Could have went out harder throughout the whole race. Forgot my cell phone charger, and got lost in Jackson MS at night. I got some really funny looks going into a gas station on the “wrong side” of town, still covered in mud, with my hot leopard print gaiters and runners number still on, asking for directions. A SUV full of guys wearing all kinds of crazy necklaces and mouths full of gold fillings gave me the best directions ever (seriously) to the airport, where I had a motel waiting. They asked me if I was out jogging, and so there we all were, just talking as if we all had been friends for years. I also forgot my GPS, but it really doesn’t help me that much, and just shows me where I am lost.

Any Other Stuff:
This was my third time running this race, and each year the course has changed. March is the wettest month in MS, and I knew that given the last two years had been relatively dry, I was bound to pay my dues. If you run this race look forward to numerous mud, swamp, and water crossing, a fantastic RD, great volunteers, well stocked aid stations, and a lovely finisher’s buckle, and trophy if you place in the top three.
