Article III: General Rules of Conduct and Penalties
3.1 Preparation and Training. No person shall participate in a triathlon or other multi-sport events unless such person: a) is trained adequately for that specific event, as might be expected of a prudent person entering a similar competition, and b) is in excellent health, based on recent training, physical examinations, if any, and generally accepted standards of good health.

Thursday Evening Workouts:
***********************************************
The Thursday evening workouts begin this week!

Remember that we start at the corner of Hydro and Ruxton, NOT Memorial Park. The group leaves at 5:45 sharp. It is strongly encouraged that you warm up before you start. We suggest parking down by Memorial Park and then jogging up to the starting point.

Note that parking along Ruxton is highly discouraged.

For more details, see the club FAQ page at http://www.inclineclub.com/faq.htm#TProto

Barr Trail Conditions Report:
***********************************************
As several folks discovered, last week the trail was totally clear below the Incline Short Cut. From there to Noname there were a few short sections of bad stuff. Above Noname it was a foot or more of packed snow in spots.

This week we had some nice warm weather so hopefully the stuff above Noname has started to melt.

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Low 50’s and Sunny

Sunday: Even nicer than last week! Mid to upper 40’s to start and then low 60’s to finish.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week the club goes the extra distance.... Dan goes 50K+, Melissa does twice that and Anita decides to reenact 3/4ths of one of the most infamous IC runs of all times.....

Sweet Water H2O 50K+ — Lithia Springs, GA — 04/03/2010
Umstead 100 — Raleigh, NC — 3/27/2010
Triple Incline Attempt — the incline! — 04/04/2010

Sweet Water H2O 50K+ — Lithia Springs, GA — 04/03/2010

Dan Burstein reports:
Distance: 50K+
Goal: Beat Last Year's Time of 7:34 & Run Well
Results: 7:23 Pooped Out in Last 7 Miles
Website: http://sweeth20races.com/

General Summary:
A well organized, friendly race. Loads of ultra runners from the south east. Grueling course during the hottest week of the year so far! Two fun and refreshing rope assisted water crossings.

Things Done Right:
Ran easy and had fun talking with more accomplished running buddies for the first 10 miles. Picked up the pace from 10 to 26 miles and was able to have fun picking off other running buddies that had taken off too fast. Wore a hot that I used to scoop water out of the creeks to cool down on second grueling set of climbs to the “Top of The World.” Finished without whining (well at least out load) or even falling down!!

Things Done Wrong:
Did not hydrate enough in second half of race. Could not summon my inner mountain goat to keep up with my last running buddy I caught at mile 26 at base of the climbs. Was too pooped out and stinky to hang out after the race with all my the running peeps.

Any Other Stuff:
Great challenging course. Always a few new twists if not outright course changes from year to year to keep it fresh and scary and fun!!

Umstead 100 — Raleigh, NC — 3/27/2010

Melissa Marr reports:
Distance: 100
Goal: finsh
Results: 75 miles :(
Website: http://umstead100.org

General Summary:
The day was just perfect for a run. The first 2 laps went according to plan, but then my stomach decided to rebel. My training partner was great to help me along to 50 miles. I deteriorated from there. Nothing stayed in my stomach. Every time I ate or drank it was soon deposited along the course leaving me completely worn out. (But I left my mark!!) Lap times started to suffer and despite the efforts of myself and staff/volunteers, nothing worked to settle my stomach. After 75 miles, I made the decision stop. It still sucks, but I gave it all I had.

Things Done Right:
Did all my training with a great partner. Trained in snow, cold, blizzards, and was very consistent. Was feeling fantastic and confident.

Things Done Wrong:
Stupid stomach. Never had any issues in any races or training prior to this. Still don’t know what set it off.

Any Other Stuff:
I guess I get credit for the 50 miler, but that is little consolation. Wonderful race day with fabulous volunteers and staff. I can’t say enough about the staff/volunteers. They are just outstanding. I will be back.....

Triple Incline Attempt — the incline! — 04/04/2010

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 14 miles
Goal: complete the incline three times in a row
Results: My quads are hammered!!

General Summary:
This was not an official race, just something a friend of mine did to see if we could do it. We received inspiration for this “great” idea from a veteran ICer, ( who will remain anonymous)to whom I give special thanks as I waddle around the house with hammered quads and calf muscles.

Things Done Right:
Completing a 100 miler barely a week earlier just wasn’t stupid enough for me I guess. I had to out-stupid myself. Incorporating a “triple incline” attempt into my recovery ( or rebuilding as I prefer to say) plan seemed like a really good stupid thing to do. Not to be out-stupided, Tracey Anderson joined me, after completing her first marathon.

Climb 1: Feeling a bit creaky from the previous weekends adventure, but once the mornings coffee started kicking in, I felt a bit slow, but fine. It took me about 50 minutes to get to the top, very slow, but I had two more times to go, and my legs were still tired.

Climb 2: This one was the toughest mentally, because I was tired from the first, and knew I still had two to go, plus running down, the long way. No bail trail allowed! Having run a 100 the week before, I knew I had the perfect excuse to wheedle my way out of it to Tracey. Tracey smoked me on the downhill, and I was secretly hoping she would continue on without me, but much to my dismay she was there at the bottom, patiently waiting for me. “I’m so glad you waited!! Thank you!! “ I lied. Honestly, I was glad she was there, otherwise I probably would have called it a day and headed for the Chocolate Bunnies and Easter Peeps.

Loop Three: Up we go! Amazingly, we are passing people. Granted, most of them were overweight tourist from Florida. But I felt OK, until Tracey told me how she impaled her Easter Peeps and roasted them. “ It’s really cool to see their eyes melt off” she said. I began to get a little nervous, and was glad this was the last time. Finally we reached the top. Each time we did it about the same amount of time, although Tracey was about 5 or 10 minutes faster than me.

It was a great feeling to be finished, and eat my chocolate bunnies without guilt. I can barely walk, but it was worth it.
