Subject: Incline Club News V14 TH #11 LR #30 Manitou Incline Management Meeting
Good Evening Incline Club!
It was great to see so many ICers at this Sundays Garden of the Gods 10 Mile race. The weather was perfect and a lot of you threw down some excellent times. As an extra added bonus, the peak got a light cover of snow that made for an excellent view once the clouds cleared.
But now we have only 5 weeks till the BTMR and 10 weeks till the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. So it's time to get running again!
Also, dont forget that he first public workshop seeking input for a Manitou Incline management plan will be held on June 24th. See below for details.

Volunteers Needed:
***********************************************
I would like to thank all of the ICers who pitched in to help make this weekend's GoG 10M a success. I spotted a lot of familiar faces just about everywhere I looked.
Dont forget that they can still use help with the remaining TCR series races. If you or somebody you know is able to volunteer for any of them, go to http://www.thetcr.com/volunteer.asp and fill out the form. Even if you are running there are opportunities to volunteer before and after the race with things like packet pickup and race tear down.

Manitou Incline Public Workshop
***********************************************
Want to share your ideas for the future of the Manitou Incline?
The first in a series of workshops seeking input for a Manitou Incline management plan will be held at 7pm on Thursday, June 24th at Manitou Springs City Hall.
***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Mid 70s with 0% chance of precip.
Sunday: Mid 60s at the start, warming up to the upper 70s.
***********************************************
Sunday *s and Race Reports:
***********************************************
Just as a quick clarification: If you are an active member of the club (with at least one Sunday or Thursday run to your name for the year) and you run in Garden of the Gods 10 Mile, Summer Roundup Trail Race, Barr Trail Mountain Race, Pikes Peak Ascent or Pikes Peak Marathon, you do not need to submit a race report to get your Sunday *.
While we do enjoy reading them there is no need to submit one just to say you ran. We employ a very sophisticated search tool that matches up the names on the Sunday/Thursday *s list with the results from each of the races. This works great if things match. If your IC profile name does not match or you DNFed, drop us a line at (email removed to prevent spam) to alert us to the fact that you ran and well give you credit (and possibly fix your profile name so that it does match).
If you were a volunteer for the race, you just need to send an email to ic@inclineclub.com to get credit.
If this is as confusing as I make it out to be, ask me at the next club run and Ill try and explain it better :~)

This week, Phil retraces the path of Lewis and Clark, John does a half marathon around a lake, Anita continues her quest to submit more race reports than anybody else in the history of the world, and Dan, Louise, Tom, Trudy, and Brenda report on what it is like to pound the pavement for 10 miles.

John Mills reports:
Distance: 13.1
Goal: Finish
Results: 2:24
General Summary:
Beautiful scenery, low key, small race. Great prize raffle. Used the race as training.
Things Done Right:
Trained at altitude.
Things Done Wrong:
Not enough training at altitude.
Any Other Stuff:
Havent run this race since 2002 when it was a 20K. New course adds a little more up hill at the start and a lap around the parking lot at the finish to gain the additional mileage.

Lewis & Clark Marathon Bozeman, Montana 6/6/2010
Phil Goulding reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: Under 4:14
Results: 4:13:26

General Summary:
I ran this race with my daughter and at her pace. We were right on our planned pace of 9:30 miles but the course was actually longer because we were asked not to run the tangents. The weather was perfect, overcast and cool and the course was well marked. The finish area was very low key but great since we ran the last 600 yards on the track. My daughter was first in her age group and 4th woman overall. I was 5th in my age--and it was the largest group with 10 runners.
Things Done Right:
Ive trained for this since December. Drank plenty of fluids, took my electrolyte pills, jells. The preparation went as planned.
Things Done Wrong:
Nothing--other than not being able to run the tangents so actually ran 26.7 miles.
Any Other Stuff:
This is a small marathon--70 finishers--held in a beautiful green valley amidst rolling green hills. The course starts uphill for three miles and then has multiple hills and downhills. The gain is 1840 feet and the descent is 2370. It has gravel roads, railroad crossings, and single track trails but is mostly paved roads. The aid stations were enthusiastic and about 3 miles apart. Gu, water, and Heed were provided. The train stopped right before the crossing and we were through with about 5 minutes to spare.

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: 4 hours
Results: 4:01:41 2nd place overall woman
Website: http://www.epmarathon.org
General Summary:
My third time running this challenging race, this year had by far the most challenging running conditions. It rained the entire race, and didnt get much over 45 degrees. The bad weather conditions and my high level of stupidity somehow contributed to me taking second place for the women.
Things Done Right:
I said I wasnt going to run competitively in this race, since I had a freak asthma attack on the Thursday club run, and twisted my knee to where it hurt just to walk. So I went out very slow the first 7 miles, and was just middle of the pack. The cold, wet weather must have helped everything go numb, including my knee, and I found myself passing people on the uphills and the downhills. I ran harder in during miles 11 to 17, and found myself passing fourth and fifth woman on some of the long climbs. It seemed like the wind and rain were always in my face no matter what direction I went.In order to stay warm I had to force myself to run hard, which worked to my advantage. I wasnt sure how close second and first were, with the horrible conditions I just wanted to get it over with, but with six miles to go I passed third, and stayed in second for the remainder of the race.I quickly jumped in the shower after the race with my wet cloths on, because I was shivering so bad I couldnt get my soaked r
unning cloths off.
Things Done Wrong:
Didnt dress warm enough, and what I did wear got so soaked it weighed me down. My hands were so cold I couldnt tear open my gels towards the end, and the aid station food was still in wrappers, and I didnt want to stop and open things. So I was running on fumes the last 10km. Everyones legs felt like nubs towards the end, and it was hard to run and not trip since I couldnt feel my legs.
Any Other Stuff:
There were lots of baby elk on the course, and we even had a doe give birth to two fawns in our back yard the Friday before the race. ( see real cute pictures of the babies on my blog)

Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Manitou Springs 06/13/2010
Dan Cockrell reports:
Distance: 10 Miles
Goal: 1:10:00
Results: DNF
General Summary:
Went into this race with high hopes, good training and came out with another pulled Soleus. Dang it!
Things Done Right:
Trained well, ate well, tapered well. Ended up with a good speed workout while it lasted.
Things Done Wrong:
Decided to weave in/out of joggers lined up at the front and pulled the right Soleus that I thought was no longer an issue. Had no issues with it for the last 3 months, can run up/down the mountain jumping over rocks, but made one bad move and felt a twinge that only got worse over the next few miles.
Any Other Stuff:
Hopefully the next week of recovery goes well and BTMR/PPM are still options. Congrats to the rest of the IC club on kicking butt and doing so well. It was awesome to look through results and see the improvements over last year. Good job. I will do my best to be there with you for the big races coming up.

Garden of the gods 10miler Garden of the Gods 06/13/10
Louise reports:
Distance: 10
Goal: 1:19
Results: 1:22.26
General Summary:
Great day for racing it was a cool rainy day. I had a great race. Did not run the time I wanted to run it in. Im slowly coming back to where I want to be. I think by next year I would have the right recipe. I started this race by using the hills as hill repeats and then recovering on the downhill. It work great I just needed to do some of them a little faster.
Things Done Right:
I had a great base for this race.
Things Done Wrong:
Get a little stronger loose some more weight. Need to keep and even fast pace throughout. I need to go to the bathroom right before the race. Holding it for 10miles is not a good thing. In a fast race like this one you cant stop not even for a minute.

Garden of the Gods Colorado Springs 06/13/2010
Tom McKernan reports:
Distance: 10 miles
Goal: 1:45
Results: 1:48
General Summary:
My 15th GOG and this was an experimental run for me. My goal was to maintain an even effort at or just below my lactate threshold. This spring I had my lactate threshold and VO2 max measured and I discovered my lactate threshold occur at a 20 bpm rate higher than I initially thought. I kept it pretty close until mile 9 where I decided to push past it for the last mile of the race.
Things Done Right:
I wanted to run all the hills, which I did. Got my daughter to run her first 10 mile race and of course, I got smoked!
Things Done Wrong:
No matter what the temps, if the humidity is high like it was on Sunday, one layer is more than enough! Sprinting the last 50 yards is also not the smartest thing Ive ever done...

Garden of the Gods Garden of the Gods 06/13/2010
Trudy DeCoronado reports:
Distance: 10 miles
Goal: finish @ 1:30 or less
Results: 1:45:22
Website: http://www.gardentenmile.com
General Summary:
Awesome day to run very excited to be a part of it though I didnt make the time I wanted....
Things Done Right:
Trained alot and hard for it to make my cut off time for Wave 1 of the Ascent
Things Done Wrong:
Played softball Friday (2 nights before race) and took a line drive to the leg which made it impossible for me to walk the rest of the night or Saturday so it was anyones guess if Id even be able to run Sunday...
Any Other Stuff:
Given the injury I recd at softball I need to be happy w/my time, but alas, Id be lying if I said I were always next year right?
