Summer Round Up 12k — Bear Creek Park, CO — 7/11/2010

Michael Foster reports:
Distance: 12k
Goal: Under 1:20
Results: 1:16:01
Website: http://www.summerroundup.com

General Summary:
Forgot to enter this on time! Whoops! The race was a fantastic race up and down Bear Creek park. The only other time I raced in Bear Creek park was for the Fall Series, and it was very hot. This day was a lot cooler and much nicer to run in. My goal was to pound out a great time uphill, then relax coming back down to avoid pre-Ascent injury.

Things Done Right:
Ran hard up hill, I flew as fast as I could, and ended up with a great time uphill. I felt great, and was able to keep up with folks who looked a lot faster than I was.

Things Done Wrong:
Stopped for the last aid station, which allowed my boss to pass me, and ultimately beat me by 30 seconds. Other than that, nothing! Had a great day!

Any Other Stuff:
An excellent race, really enjoyed the course. I got a small sense of satisfaction from the race stopping the Carmichael training team on one of their rides. Nothing against them, but it was mildly amusing when I was really tired!

Barr Trail Mountain Race — Barr Trail, CO — 7/17/2010

Michael Foster reports:
Distance: 12.575 miles
Goal: Finish this year
Results: 2:59:20
Website: http://www.runpikespeak.com/

General Summary:
Overall a well organized race and great one to be a part of. Last year I missed the cut off by about 1 minute, so I had a personal vendetta to finish it this year.

Things Done Right:
Trained hard for the race, tapered exactly right, kept hydrated, and got lucky with a cooler day this year. I also ran with my friend Andy, and we were able to keep each other company for the whole race and take turns setting the pace going uphill.

Things Done Wrong:
Not too much, had a great day!

Any Other Stuff:
The race is a great one, I really like that the entry fees and so much more are donated. The volunteers were enthusiastic even for being there for many hours. A great race, and I am really glad I finished this year!

Leadville 10K Run — Leadville, CO — 08/15/10

Theresa Pitman reports:
Distance: 10K
Goal: get one last hard-ish run in the week before the PP Marathon
Results: 49:10, 4th Female, 3rd in AG

General Summary:
Crewed for the Leadville 100 Mtn Bike race all day on Saturday and knew that if I waited to get home to run it probably wasn’t happening so I jumped into the 10K that takes place after the LT100 award ceremonies. Great little race above 10,000 feet unlike most races I’ve done where we start by going up. This race went down 3.1 miles and then turn around and come back up. Pretty tough but a great last effort before the marathon.

Things Done Right:
Decided to do it 1 hour before the start, no time to get nervous.

Things Done Wrong:
Was on my feet all day crewing for the bike race on Saturday and just felt dead. But it was a fun time!

Pikes Peak Marathon — Manitou Springs — 08/22/2010

Tracey Anderson reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: 6 or squeak under, if I could
Results: 6:13
Website: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/

General Summary:
Beautiful, though hot day up and down Pikes Peak. Felt inexplicably heavy all the way up even though I held back quite a bit up to No Name. Just couldn’t get the legs to turn over on those nice flat stretches where I usually find my mojo. Got stuck in traffic a lot between the pit and aframe. I usually make good time here because for some reason, I like the part most people hate. Got to the top at my slowest time all year. I think I might be tapering wrong for me or something. I don’t know, but it’s disappointing. I can make up for a lot on the downhill, so I was counting on that. Unfortunately, I broke my own rule of never look at your watch when running downhill. Shortly after the pit sign, I glanced down at my watch, thought “oh yea! if I make it to camp in the next 10 minutes, I can still squeeze in under 6!” and the next thing I know, I was looking at some pink granite. Hit a rock with my chin and evidently a few other things judging by the swelling all over me. Rang my bell good . Got up, shook it off and got going again. Fully intended to fill my bottle at camp while getting through there as fast as possible and hollered, “I’m okay, just bit my lip!” which is what I thought I had done judging by the copious amount of blood coming from my mouth. Regrettably I must have looked pretty bad because SAR started hollering at me and I felt a hand on my bicep pull me over. Got looked at, made to smile to prove I had all my teeth, got my mouth rinsed out, got offered all kinds of help while I kept trying to grab my bottle and get the heck out of there. SAR at every stop along the way down yelled at me as I went by and I kept yelling back, “I’ve already been checked, I’m fine!” which, had I all my faculties, I should have said in order to get through Barr Camp faster.

I just did not have the same guts going down the last 7 miles that I normally would have, but I tried to keep a good fast, but sensible pace. I was sure I was not going under 6 anymore, but I was going to at least get there before I swallowed so much blood I started puking. Finally I got to Ruxton and that was fun. I had no idea what I looked like, but seeing the looks on other people’s faces, I knew it must be good, so of course, I smiled my biggest smile. I heard one photographer say, “OMG there’s blood on her teeth!"
Medical did a nice job of cleaning me up, but I still frightened some little kids in the park.

In the end, I got a nice gash in my chin, a split lip, a loose tooth, gashes in both elbows and one leg, road rash, a few rocks in my bra and a big hole on the inside of my lower lip. All in all, a nice day to get whalloped upside the head.

Things Done Right:
Followed Matt’s rule: “if you ain’t fallin’, you ain’t going fast enough.”

Followed Matt’s second rule: “if the bone ain’t showin’, keep on goin’”

Trained well.

Didn’t spit blood on the spectators.

Things Done Wrong:
Looked at my stupid watch.

Need to learn crowd management.

As is said, maybe the taper isn’t working for me.

Comments on Calculator:
Calculator works well if you don’t fall on your face. You get a different kind of split for that. har har.

Pikes Peak Marathon — Manitou Springs — 08/22/2010

Jason Mehlos reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Under 5:00
Results: 5:20:08

General Summary:
Happy with the result for my first PPM. Learned a what it will take to break 5 hours.
My strong point is downhill but that’s where I fell apart. I’m gonna kill it next year!

Things Done Right:
Ate well for the months/weeks before the race, cut 10 pounds, did some good speed work on Thursday night IC runs, got some rest the week before, started on pace, didn’t linger at aid stations, kept drinking even though I was nauseated, pushed hard when it hurt the most, stayed upright and didn’t break anything.

Things Done Wrong:
Not enough distance training. Not even a 20 miler this year. Ran out of gas at treeline coming down and walked on and off until a bit after Barr Camp...then ignored the pain, zoned out and kept running.

Any Other Stuff:
I prefer the Marathon to the Ascent ‘cause I didn’t have to wait for a ride down.
The cold shower at the car wash was perfect!
I was fascinated watching the Medical Staff helping runners at the finish tent. Maybe I’ll finally start Paramedic/EMT training.

Pike Peak Marathon — Manitou Springs, CO — 08/22/2010

Theresa Pitman reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Under 6 hours and possibly top 20 in the woman’s field
Results: 5:55 and 19th female overall

General Summary:
Never done the marathon but I survived wave 2 of the Ascent in 2008, so the weather forecast had me smiling from the beginning. Went out a bit harder than expected but it is racing. Ran right below a 3:30 ascent pace until we started running into the fast guys coming down and keeping up that pace became more difficult with moving over to give them space on the trail. Got to the top in about 12th place among the females and then quickly lost spots on the downhill, I was just not comfortable going any faster than I was going. Pushed through a couple side stitches and one good fall where I managed to drive my elbow into my quad for a good charlie horse. Ended up still meeting my goals but am bummed about all the spots I lost on the downhill.

Things Done Right:
Trained with my ascending paces, took salt since it was hot. Fell with good form, just have a scraped up knee and a bit on my elbow.

Things Done Wrong:
Didn’t train enough for a fast downhill and could have eaten a bit more. Should have pushed the pace a bit more in the last 3 miles to the top before we stared hitting the runners coming down.

Comments on Calculator:
Pacing calculator worked great for me while I was training and on race day it helped me not get too caught up in the race and stay within what I knew I could do.

Any Other Stuff:
Loved it but since I have the marathon out of the way I will stick to the Ascent from here on out.

Phil Goulding — Pikes Peak Marathon — 08/22/2010

Phil Goulding reports:
Distance: 26.2 Miles
Goal: 5:40
Results: 6:29:10
Website: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/

General Summary:
Finishing this race vertical and no blood was a primary goal and I met that goal.

Things Done Right:
I trained hard for this race. I’ve run about 1300 miles and 220,000 vertical feet (in each direction--up and down) ran at altitude during the month before the race, hydrated a lot during the race, took Endurolytes at least every hour, and ate well. I couldn’t have been better prepared unless I quit my job and took up running full time. I timed each portion of the course during training and had a good idea of the effort/pace I wanted to maintain and until my foot started to hurt, was right on my pace time.

Things Done Wrong:
Sometime after the turn off for the Bottomless Pit my foot started hurting and then going numb--similar to what happened last year, only earlier. Turns out I have a neuroma which seems to flare up a long ways into an uphill run. It never bothered me in any of the 20 mile training runs I did.

Comments on Calculator:
Mine Calc. Mine Calc.
Ruxton 0:03:40 4:37 0:03:40 4:37

Finish 0:30:35 0:21:38 3:54:15 3:30:00

My split times were good up through the Bottomless Pit and into the A-Frame. From there I ended up walking most of the way.

Any Other Stuff:
The day was beautiful and the volunteers could not have been better. Food, water and encouragement were available all the way up and down the course. Someone had worked on the trail because it was in better shape than it had been a week earlier. We were monitored at the finish line carefully to make sure we were ok. Kudos to Ron Ilgen and the rest of his hundreds of volunteers.

PPA & Marathon — Manitou springs — 08/21& 22/

Larry Miller reports:
Distance: from bottom to top and down the next day
Goal: live to tell a tail
Results: do I have a story

General Summary:
I can’t believe what I saw:
Mike E in at the summit Assent day, taking O2.
John O’D can really run and showed his stuff on top of the Peak.
One Turkey In the Club????? Ha Linda
Tracy Anderson, new chin and a Jay Leno look alike
What was hardest to believe was the picture in the paper on Monday morning. I’ve seen this person finish a lot of races and he’s always eyes ahead, run hard till it’s over. Balls to the wall and all that stuff. This Year I believe he Had fun finishing the PPM.

Things Done Right:
Beer

Things Done Wrong:
Took a volunteer to the top I had questions about, only to have medical take him down after couple hours. Hearing one of the long time volunteers had a minor heart problem.

Comments on Calculator:
weather to nice Saturday, windy on Sunday.
Found out why people volunteer for EPCSR. I went to one their vehicles to get to the start of the race and they were in their trucks eating hash browns, sausage and eggs. I’m going to bring my stove and food up next year.

Any Other Stuff:
Thank You Ron for the dedication of the PPA & PPM to the memory Of Bill G.

Pikes Peak Double — Pikes Peak — 08/22/2010

Matt Hopper reports:
Distance: 13.3 & 26.2 = 39.5
Goal: To finish and not end up in the med tent...
Results: Accomplished

General Summary:
First time doubler. Training was going super, until I blew out my knee in May...bummer... Took off approx 8 weeks, and after getting back to training, changed my goals to “just finish"... which I did...

Thanks to all my running buddies out there who helped me thru this extremely difficult time. Your support was needed and awesome!

Things Done Right:
Just took it easy. Never pushed too hard. Saturday I felt good at the start, but just didn’t seem to have it on the trail. Never really felt comfortable. Sunday, felt awful at the start (didn’t sleep Sat. night...) but really felt good once race got started. Had a Negative split for my Ascent time on Sunday, so that was cool. Started thinking I could go sub 4:15, but got blocked behind too many slower runners up top, and couldn’t get around them quick enough...

Things Done Wrong:
ummm...Blew out the knee in May was probably my biggest mistake...Needed something different for fuel on Sunday, because all the GU Gels wanted to come out just before Bobs Road aid station... Too much time “wasted” with that nature call, otherwise would have been sub 7 hrs for the marathon... Other than that, I was pretty happy with things, given the circumstances.

Comments on Calculator:
Didn’t use it this year, but has worked fine in the past.

Any Other Stuff:
Really enjoyed this, even with the obstacles encountered. My brother comes out next year to double, I hope to have the knee rehabbed, so I can finally kick his **s...

PPA/PPM — Double — Manitou Springs — 08/22/2010

Carl Olson reports:
Distance: 39.3
Goal: Stay vertical on the descent!
Results: 3:47 PPA 6:14 PPM
Website: http://pikespeakmarathon.org

General Summary:
Heat is my worst enemy & it was hot!

Things Done Right:
Patient in the W’s. When I realized I wasn’t going to obtain my Ascent goal of sub 3:40, didn’t kill myself above A-Frame. Ice bath Saturday afternoon. Drank & ate a lot both days. Took my time on the descent & DIDN’T FALL ONCE!!!

Things Done Wrong:
Arrived at the summit on the PPM before my pit crew & didn’t get the food & drink I had planned on — worked out OK though.

Comments on Calculator:
I always seem to be slower from Barr Camp to A Frame than the calculator times — rest is about right.

Any Other Stuff:
A little slower on the PPA than I wanted, but MUCH faster than I thought I could do on the PPM. I ran A Frame to summit faster on Sunday by two minutes!

Great Chocolate Chip Cookies
***********************************************

Original recipe by David Lebovitz with modifications by Bethany Garner for life at 6500ft.

1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (120 grams) firmly packed light brown sugar
8 tablespoons (1 stick) (115 grams) unsalted butter, cold, cut into 1/2-inch (1cm) pieces
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups (200 grams) all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups (200 grams) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup (130 grams) walnuts or pecans, toasted and chopped (optional)

Adjust the oven rack to the top 1/3 of the oven and preheat to 300F (150C). Preheat cookie sheets in the oven and then spray with non-stick spray.

Beat the sugars and butters together until smooth. Mix in the egg, vanilla, and baking soda. Stir together the flour and salt, then mix them into the batter. Mix in the chocolate chips and nuts.

Scoop the cookie dough into 2-tablespoon (5cm) balls and place 8 balls, spaced 4 inches (10cm) apart, on each of the baking sheets.

Bake for 16 minutes, or until pale golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Make about 20 cookies.
