Subject: Incline Club News V16 LR #15 PPA/M Registration, Chip Timing
Good Morning Incline Club!
February is now officially behind us. Hopefully it will take the bitter cold days with it and the ice along the trail.
This week we have a note about registration for a race of interest to most ICers, an announcement from PPRR and PPM and hopefully some good weather for Sundays run.

Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon Registration
***********************************************
It is that time of the year again. Entry for this years Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon is Thursday, March 15th. That is less than 2 weeks away. Full details are at http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/entry.htm
There are no major changes to the qualification process this year.
And for all of you PPA/M vets, the results search page at http://www.skyrunner.com/search/find.asp will now directly link you to the waves and fields that you are eligible for. So for a good number of you there will be no math or guesswork required.

Chip Timing for PPRR/TCR Races
***********************************************
Im happy to announce that Pikes Peak Road Runners and Pikes Peak Marathon have entered into a partnership to bring chip timing to the Triple Crown of Running races this year.
The new system will make use of disposable RFID chips that are placed on the back of the bib. No chips to return at the end, no d-tag to attach to your shoe laces. Just put your bib on as normal and you are ready to go. (Just please dont fold the chip.)
What does this mean for you, the runner? For starters, you will now receive both a chip and gun time for the events. For those who are aiming for a PR or PPA qualifier, you no longer have to start at the front of the pack to avoid being penalized the 10, 20 or 60 seconds it takes you to cross the start line. Then once you finish the race you will no longer need to stand in line at the end and wait to have your tag pulled.
Furthermore, it paves the way for the ability to collect on course splits at the various races. So in the future it will be possible to provide you with proof of the number of folks you passed above A-Frame.
And as an IC newsletter exclusive, Tim Bergsten (http://www.pikespeaksports.us/) has provided us with first access to the press release announcing the partnership, which can be viewed at http://bit.ly/wvGaWq

Barr Trail Conditions Report:
***********************************************
Last week the lower sections of Barr Trail were mostly clear, with only a few corners to worry about. That all came to an end at the Incline short cut trail, where the trail turned to ice for the next switchback or two. Then it was easy going again with only a few small areas until you came to the wall of ice at NoName. This was not the normal crunchy stuff you can get traction on, this was a sheet of shiny stuff that had recently frozen over. Hopefully a week of warm weather will melt more of the ice and provide an easier route through that section.
Hopefully the trail will continue to improve, but with Fridays chance of snow all bets are off.

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Expect mid 30s to start, warming up to the mid to upper 40s for the day. It should be sunny and a great day to go for a run.

Cross Timbers Marathon Lake Texoma Texas 02/18/2012
Thomas Dinwoodie reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: sub 4 hours
Results: 8th over all
Website: http://results.active.com/uploads/xls/123884.xls
General Summary:
The weather played a BIG part in the outcome of this trail race. I believe I was ready for the trail and the distance. My training had been good up to my taper and I actual did taper. Got across the finish line with a top ten over all finish in 8th (4:21:XX), pretty good start to the marathon season.
Things Done Right:
As I stated above I actually tapered for this race. Ate well the night before and got some good rest (No late night drinking even with Don S being there).
Things Done Wrong:
Nothing really one or two places on the course I could have pushed harder had I known the course, but thats hind sight.
Any Other Stuff:
Never had my shoe pulled off by mud before might tie them a little tighter next time. :)

Cross Timbers Trail Run Lake Texoma, Texas 02/18/2012
Lisa Dinwoodie reports:
Distance: 5 Miles
Goal: 1-1/2 hours
Results: 1:10:56
Website: http://results.active.com/pages/page.jsp?eventID=2017014&pubID=3
General Summary:
The Cross Timbers Trail Run included a 50-Mile Ultra, Marathon, 1/2-Marathon, and 5-Miler. Dubbed The toughest little trail in Texas I was a little concerned but excited to run my first trail race. The course was a muddy 5-Mile lollipop trail that ran through the woods along the shore of Lake Texoma. The trail was mostly single track, it had a couple bridges, and at least one area where we had to use the tree roots and saplings to pull ourselves up the washed-out trail. Did I mention the course was muddy?
Things Done Right:
The best decision I made (after signing up for this race), I chose to wear my trail shoes. I feel sorry for those people who didnt I saw a lot of slipping and sliding in the mud due to the lack of traction. But I still crossed the finish line with 15lbs of mud on my shoes...
Things Done Wrong:
Nothing.
Any Other Stuff:
My Garmin indicated this course was only 4.6 miles so when I crossed the finish line, I wasnt quite ready to be done. Perhaps I will run the 1/2 Marathon next year.....
(Finished 7th Overall for Women)

Winter Series IV Black Forest 02/25/2012
Mary Toman reports:
Distance: 20K
Goal: Redeem from last year
Results: PR
General Summary:
12.4 miles on Black Forest backroads. Well oiled machine that is the Winter Series thanks Mike, John, Pat & all wonderful vol!!
Things Done Right:
Volunteer before the race idea was to stay busy & not worry about bathroom lines, warm-up, whos racing. Worked great on WS I...worked again. I knew I could beat my time from last yr, when I let the wind beat me up. I also beat my time from 2010!! Yeah Thanks John & Deidre for great pacing & company, even if were not able to chit-chat much (like some of the powerhouses out there).
Used Matts trick of putting gel & water in my bottle & sipping thru the race. Worked great, but also chowed down beans; lost track of how many but I got thru the race strong, able to power on last 2 miles & kick last 1/2 mile (thanks to intervals with Sharon).
Things Done Wrong:
Still dealing w/ side stitches (no, not from chit-chatting); better hit the core workouts harder. Had to back-off pace in the beginning, then had to play catch-up.

Fight For Air Stair Climb-Denver Republic Building, Denver, CO 02/26/2012
Michael Everson reports:
Distance: ?? 56 floors
Goal: Become an ELITE runner
Results: Became an Elite runner
Website: http://www.lung.org/pledge-events/co/denver-climb-fy12/
General Summary:
This is a race up the tallest building in Denver. I run on a team called the COS INCLINE FANATICS. Our team has won the team category of the race every year since 2008. Its 56 floors of lung busting horror. The air totally sucks in the stairwell.
Things Done Right:
Trained with Baxters on the Incline. Practiced in the Plaza of the Rockies South tower for 1 month leading up to the race. Took the usual dump 1 hour before the race (yeah!!!!). Wore super light shoes. I paced well this year and didnt kill my race in the first 10 floors. Used the rails effectively and had the juice I needed for the last 10 floors. Ran for the best team with Shawn Erchinger, Simon Gutierrez, Mark Ewell, Lawrence Pelo, Mark Tahanavsky, and Andrea Hill.
Things Done Wrong:
Forgot to suck down a goo before the race. So not too bad. Race is over in 9 minutes, so sucking one down on the trip up would have been a wasted effort.
Any Other Stuff:
Its amazing how the temperature was identical this year as last year. Temps were in the mid 60s at the bottom of the stairwell. They dropped to what felt like the teens somewhere around the 32nd floor as the wind from the AC unit blasted out cold air. Then, quickly rose to the mid 60s again by races end. Very little wind (see previous sentence) to speak of.
Racers are staggered at 5 second intervals. We had 7 members on our team, so we were all in the well at 35 seconds in to the race. At the end of the day, we had 5 of the top 10 finishers on our team. We also had 4th place woman on our team. That led to a victory once again of the COS Incline Fanatics for a 5th year in a row.
I placed 37th overall, 9th in age group (40-49) and was chicked only once by Kim Dobson who is a total badass and won the womens race. My time: 8:44. Sub 9=Elite according to the website :) Thats the first time Ive been considered elite in anything.
Then, I drove to Manitou Springs and nailed down a 28:26 on the Incline and was still home before noon. Not a bad Sunday morning.
